weekly chocolate-On being overwhelmed

“One may walk over the highest mountain one step at a time.” -Barbara Walters

I am one of those people who dreams big. So you’re probably not surprised to hear that I also have some wonderful friends who dream big too. And big dreams require big goals.

One friend of mine is training for a triathlon, one is putting plans in place to sail around the world, another is launching two separate businesses at the same time.

When I talk with these women about their dreams and big goals, I am inspired to set some more big goals of my own.

Big goals are a nod of faith in the direction of our dreams. They mean that we’re not just keeping our head in the clouds, hoping that “one day”  we’ll get around to doing “that thing” we’ve always wanted to do. They are a way to say, to the universe and everyone around us, that we’re serious about making things happen.

Sometimes, big goals are intimidating because they are so freakin‘ big. If you’re like me, or any number of people out there aspiring towards a big goal, at some point, you may feel overwhelmed. There’s just SO MUCH THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE! There’s just SO MUCH TO LEARN! There’s just SO MUCH THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN!

The whole goal, when looked upon in its entirety, can seem too huge to accomplish. If you find yourself setting out towards a dream, if you’ve made your big goal and then feel quite terrified because of its size, just take a deep breath. When this happens, it’s time to take one step.

Silence the lizard. You don’t have to have it all figured out just yet. You don’t have to worry about the myriad What If’s for an already uncertain future. For today, all you have to do is take one move in the direction of what you’d like to accomplish and no one move is too small.

Yes, that dream is huge and beautiful. It stands there on the horizon every day when you awake. But, like a mountain, it can be ascended, if you remember that’s it’s okay to climb it one step at a time.
