Online Dating & “The” picture

Posted on June 15, 2011

If you’ve decided to take the plunge into the world of online dating, most likely you’re probably feeling some anxiety about the whole profile-writing-thing. How you present yourself and the ways in which your present yourself, will be one of the initial determining factors in how successful your online dating experience will be.

So let’s start with one of the most important aspects of your profile: Your Picture.

Your picture is important. Really, really important. I know that some of you probably don’t want to hear that. You would like to think that the pictures you post really don’t say that much about you. Or maybe you think putting too much emphasis on your picture indicates a degree of shallowness (either on your part or that of others).

But the picture, or pictures, you include on your online profile will help the right people naturally gravitate towards you. One of the first things human beings learn as infants is how to identify faces. We often see “human” facial aspects in non-human things (like clouds and designs). We are neurologically wired to look at and look for others’ faces.

So you’ve got to include a picture of yourself on your profile so that people can intuitively get a feel for who you are. And some guidelines is this department wouldn’t hurt either. In my next post, I’ll be detailing what makes for great online dating pictures.
