Forgiveness can be a tricky thing.

If you forgive someone, does it make you naive? Does it mean that you condone another person’s hurtful actions? Does it set you up to be a doormat? There tends to be a lot of spiritual baggage around the word forgive and around the concept of forgiveness.

In my life experience, you forgive for yourself. So you’re not going around, carrying all of that anger and bitterness with you. So you’re not contaminating your interactions with others with negative energy. So you can release the bad and let in more good. Forgiving someone does not mean that you will allow someone to hurt you again. Nor does it mean you rush right into it, into a phony form of forgiveness, because you believe that’s what a good person should do.

Forgiveness is something you do for yourself. When you’re ready.
