Buddha’s Work

Posted on November 12, 2012

Buddha’s life work was to teach others how to meditate. He wanted others to reach the state of enlightenment that he had and he believed meditation was the most effective way to do this. So that’s what he spent his whole life doing-teaching others how to meditate.

On the last day of his life, as he lay on his death bed, someone came to the Buddha and asked him if he would teach meditation. Buddha’s faithful servant said something like-Are you kidding me? Don’t you see that the great Buddha is dying? Do you think he wants to teach you meditation right now?

But the Buddha said-Bring him in. This person wants to learn meditation and so I must teach him.

That’s because teaching meditation was Buddha’s life work. So even as he lay dying, he did it.

When we talk about your life’s work, this is the stuff we’re talking about. We’re talking about something you would do, even if you knew it was your last day on earth.
