In my March newsletter I provided a coaching exercise for my subscribers entitled, “Pick a Side.”

This is such an important coaching exercise. So important that I’m going to publish it again, here, just in case you didn’t get it. (And if you haven’t signed up for my monthly newsletter, you really need to. You can sign up here.)

How many of us walk around with beliefs that someone else told us to believe-about ourselves, about our lives, about our own self-worth? How many of us have ever critically analyzed not only these statements, but the sources from whence they came?

Based on the work I do with my clients, I can tell you the answer is ‘not many.’ If you’re ready to live your own life, with your own thoughts and beliefs, that it’s high time you took a look at what’s going on inside of your head. That’s what this exercise is designed to help you do.

PICK A SIDE

Read the statements below. Record the specific names of people that meet the criteria for each category.

 1.      I am a natural born winner; always was, always will be.

People who told you that you were:                               People who told you that you weren’t:

 2.      The world is full of people who would love to be my friends.

People who told you this:                                                People who told you otherwise:

 3.      I’ll always have plenty of money.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 4.      I deserve a life of joy and fulfillment.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 5.      I’m physically beautiful and I always will be.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 6.      I can be wildly successful at my chosen career.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 7.      I have an amazingly capable brain.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 8.      I am perfectly lovable exactly as I am.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 9.      I’m highly creative by nature.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

 10.  My dreams are in the process of coming true.

People who have told you this:                            People who have told you otherwise:

*Now review the names above and note which ones you like and respect more. Of them, who is happier and more successful?

Exactly. So why in the name of all that’s holy would you ever listen to the people in the second category?
