#13: Self-Centered

Posted on July 27, 2013

It’s not difficult to ascertain whether someone else is self-centered.  You will notice this almost from the very beginning of the relationship.

If you share a difficulty in your life with them, they will turn the conversation directly back to themselves. Not just once, but over and over again. They will meet up with you, but they will insist that you revolve your schedule around a time that’s convenient for them, rather than be willing to coordinate schedules. Like some of the other personality traits we mentioned earlier this month, they will expect/demand a lot from others and give very little in return.

In short, everything will be always be all. about. them.

I keep reading research study after research study that states Americans are becoming more self-centered. I don’t think we should become complacent or accepting of this trait just because it’s become more prevalent in the past few decades.  The truth is that yes, there are a lot of self-centered people in the world. There are also a lot of lovely, gracious people in the world too.

The self-centered person only has time and energy for him or herself. It’s pretty impossible to be in a healthy relationship with someone who doesn’t count you as an important part of the equation. Spend your time and your energy wisely-on people who will reciprocate your kindness.
