#14: Draining

Tired Of Phone Calls

Ever been in a conversation with someone only to feel, once you got back home, that you had been completely drained? Devoid of energy? Like the other person just sucked the very life force out of you?

I know I have. When  I walk away from these interactions I feel like I need a nap. Certain people drain us. Not because they’re bad or because they have malignant intentions, just because they do. We’re all different. So the person who drains you may not drain me. Based on our different make-ups and personalities, certain people energize us and certain people drain us.

Here’s a coaching secret: People who drain you are not supposed to be in your inner circle. Surround yourself with people who energize and inspire you, and you’ll do much, much better and be much, much happier.

The next time you’re around someone who just sucks the life right outta you, make conscious and consistent effort to create some distance between you and them. Energy, like all precious resources, must be used wisely. You don’t want to be giving yours away to the person who never gives it back. Truly healthy relationships should be a reciprocation of energy (among other things).  If you feel drained, it’s a red flag.
